At least one person has been killed and 22 others injured after a speeding car hit pedestrians in New York’s Times Square.
The deceased is an 18-year-old Michigan tourist who was visiting the Big Apple with her family, including her 13-year-old sister who was injured, the New York Times reports.
The crash happened at about midday local time.
A number of people were treated for their injuries at the scene.
Some eyewitnesses said the driver’s actions seemed to be intentional driving against traffic and deliberately mounting the pavement.
For the moment, however, police appear to be ruling out terrorism.
They have said the collision was more likely an accident after the car ‘‘lost control’‘.
Police have named the suspected driver, who was arrested at the scene, as Richard Rojas from New York.
The 26 year-old is believed to have previous convictions for drunk driving.
Witnesses claim he tried to run away from the car but was tackled to the ground after hitting barricades and coming to a standstill.
Lying in the heart of downtown Manhattan, the popular tourist spot is said to have been packed at the time of the incident.
